Synopsis:

Tokyo Twilight (1957)
Two sisters live with their father. The younger sister is embroiled in an affair and becomes pregnant. The elder sister has run away from her husband and returned with her child to her parent's home. Both sisters are astonished when their mother, long thought dead, turns up alive. The sisters are even more stunned when they learn what their mother's life has been.

Woman of Tokyo (1933)
Ryoichi and Chikako are brother and sister. They live together. Chikako works during the day in a office and at night she prostitutes herself to fund her brother studies in univesity. Ryoichi doesn't know about his sister's secret life but he is dating Harue whose brother is a policeman.

Early Spring (1956)
Early Spring is a 1956 film by Yasujiro Ozu about a married office worker (Ry? Ikebe) who has a fling with a typist, a fellow commuter, and the fallout that ensues with his friends and wife (Chikage Awashima). The film stars Keiko Kishi as the typist.

The BFI presents three films by Japanese master director Yasujiro Ozu. Melodrama is not a word usually associated with Ozu's quietly poetic oeuvre but his post-war Early Spring (1956) and Tokyo Twilight (1957) combine darker elements with his idiosyncratic style to create powerful dramas. Also available for the first time on DVD in the UK is Ozu's rare silent Woman of Tokyo (1933), a tragic tale of misunderstood sacrifice. Woman of Tokyo features a newly commissioned score by Ed Hughes.
