Synopsis:
Triple bill of supernatural dramas adapted by the BBC. In 'The Signalman' (1976), based on the story by Charles Dickens, Denholm Elliott stars as a troubled railway signalman who has witnessed some unsettling sights and sounds along his stretch of track. A curious traveller (Bernard Lloyd) tries to make sense of these strange goings-on. In 'Stigma' (1977) Katherine Delgado (Kate Binchy) and her family move into a new home but have difficulty removing a menhir from their garden. When they disrupt the ancient site, a spectre is unleashed which leaves Katherine experiencing terrifying situations and an increasing sense of panic. In 'The Ice House' (1978) Paul (John Stride) goes to stay at a spa resort to help him get over the breakdown of his marriage. While there he meets the resort's bizarre owners, siblings Clovis (Geoffrey Burridge) and Jessica (Elizabeth Romilly), who lead him to their garden ice house and encourage him to take in the scent of their flowers. When his nights are disturbed by unexplained activity he decides to take matters into his own hands to find out the truth about the mysterious ice house.

The Signalman (1976)
The Signalman is a 1976 BBC television adaptation of 'The Signal-Man', an 1866 short story by Charles Dickens. The story was adapted by Andrew Davies as the BBC's sixth Ghost Story for Christmas, with Denholm Elliott starring as the signalman and Bernard Lloyd as the traveller, an unnamed character who acts as a plot device in place of the short story's narrator.

Stigma (1977)
The film concerns an apparently dysfunctional rural family who come together for a meal as workmen attempt to lift a large, heavy stone from their garden, part of an ancient stone circle. As the stone is lifted, a skeleton is unearthed and an ancient curse is unleashed, which causes the mother to bleed uncontrollably, despite having no wounds; the implication is that her body is re-enacting the ritual sacrifice of a witch.

The Ice House (1978)
Paul (John Stride) joins a high class health spa run by a strangely over-friendly brother and sister. Drawn to the scent of an unusual vine, Paul is troubled by the use of an old ice-house that it grows from.

As a Christmas treat in the late 1960s and 70s, the BBC produced adaptations of ghost stories based on the works of MR James, the Cambridge academic and author of some of the most spine-tingling tales in the English language, which were broadcast to terrified viewers in the dead of winter. This was a tradition that was briefly revived by the BBC between 2007 and 2010.
These adaptations, which have a subtlety and style all of their own, have been a major influence on many contemporary British horror filmmakers and have come to be some of the most sought after British TV titles of all time by their legions of eager fans. Volume four includes 1976's The Signalman, 1977's Stigma and 1978's The Ice House. Although most films in the series were based on the works of MR James, The Signalman was scripted by Andrew Davies (Pride & Prejudice) from a Charles Dickens story, while the last two films on this volume were based on original scripts.
