Synopsis:
A year before the end of the war on the island of Saipan in the Pacific, the last remaining Japanese soldiers were prepared to fight the Americans to the very end. One soldier, Captain Oba, instilled in his men honour, bravery and above all else, hope. He was nicknamed The Fox by the US Troops as he continued to undermine and outsmart them at every turn, but at a cost. With only 47 surviving men, unaware Japan had conceded defeated, they still fought one. This is the remarkable story of the unsung heroes who never gave up fighting for their country. The island will always be remembered as Suicide Island by the Japanese.

In 1944, the American military lands on the shores of Saipan. Refusing to commit suicide with his superiors or be forced into camps for prisoners of war, Captain Oba Sakae leads a group of his men and other similarly minded local residents into the mountains. Even after hearing reports of the Japanese military's surrender, Oba dismisses the reports as propaganda and continues to launch guerilla attacks against the American soldiers, earning him the nickname "The Fox". Soon, even the American commander who's charged with the task of capturing Oba comes to admire his persistent enemy.

Oba, the Last Samurai is set during the bitter Battle of Saipan (1944-45), one of the most bloody and tragic battles waged in the Pacific during WWII. Based on a story documented by US marine Don Jones, the film chronicles the strength and bravery of Captain Sakae Oba, whose incredible tactical ability led US forces to dub him 'The Fox.' A rare example of the war-film genre, Oba tells the story from both Japanese and US perspectives, shedding light on the samurai creed of death before dishonour which motivated Japanese troops and mystified the US military.
