Synopsis:
Once upon a time… there was a genius of American mass culture who was captivated and inspired by classical European art. Walt Disney was a gifted storyteller who surrounded himself with brilliant artists from Sweden, Denmark and England, all of whom helped to cultivate and animate his fertile imagination. This documentary embarks us on a search to find the classical-art sources that inspired the first creations by the Disney studios. Like a journey through WONDERLAND, filmmaker Samuel Doux tells the Disney story with bravura vividness. He merrily weaves various interviews with specialists and excerpts from Disney's most celebrated works together with a dazzling array of stills, as well as numerous 2D and 3D animated sequences. In addition to chronicling the creation of Disney Studios, Doux offers fresh insight into the font of Disney's creativity as he examines the influence on the imagery of such Disney classics as SNOW WHITE, PINOCCHIO and FANTASIA by such artistic masters as Doré, Daumier, Bruegel and many others.

In the middle of the 1930s, Walt Disney undertook a long journey across Europe from which he returned with hundreds of illustrated books and engravings. A treasure trove that would be a major source of inspiration for his subsequent animated features. The film relates Walt Disney's artistic journey and the joyous clash between high culture and popular culture, in which Gustave Doré, Daumier and Rembrandt play peek-a-boo with Snow White, Pinocchio and the Sleeping Beauty. With a tone and a rhythm taken from cartoons, the story unfolds as an investigation within Disney's mind itself, blending specialist interviews, animated 3D sequences, and archives, along with clips from Disney's most famous works such as Snow White, Cinderella, Fantasia, Bambi, Dumbo, etc.
