Synopsis:
A pure product of the sixties, the movement called "Narrative Figuration" has its roots in the highly politicized Gaullist France of the early 1960s, in which controversial ideologies and aesthetic ruptures led to the social upheaval of May '68. Having come from all over Europe, the artists who joined this movement voiced the preoccupations of their time by placing political and social issues at the heart of their art. In breaking with the dominant lyrical abstraction of their day, these artists drew their inspiration from graphic arts such as comic strips, cinema and photography. This DVD contains two films, each 26 minutes long, which focus on the climax of 1968 and tell the stories of exceptional people who loved, fought, made mistakes, betrayed and really lived. By alternating exclusive interviews of numerous artists wth both official and personal archival footage, this documentary enables us to understand what motivated and inspired these artists and how they saw the world.

A two-part documentary alternating archival footage with paintings and interviews with the artists who "made" Narrative Figuration. With incredible exuberance, these nine artists retrace the movement's genesis, reviving the most intense experiences of those highly politicized years when art conversed with history.
