Jake Robbins (Kris Kristofferson) has been missing for 17 years after being shot down over Cambodia while serving in the Air Force. His wife Sarah (JoBeth Williams), believing him to be dead, has married again. Yet when Jake reappears, her world is turned upside down and she finds herself unavoidably questioning her feelings and the three are forced to either reassemble their lives or have them torn apart by their old and new relationships.

Jake died in Vietnam; his family mourned him, then moved on. When he reappears, quite alive, the question is, what must he do and how will his family respond to him?
