Synopsis:
Austria's largest housing complex erected in one building stage is situated in the Northeast of Vienna. It lies on the former premises of a horse racetrack and comprises 2.400 flats. 59 blocks and long hall-like corridors lead more than 8.000 people to their living rooms: The film offers glimpses into the lives of more than 20 people - the life of an individual behind one of the countless doors. These lives in their entirety make up the overall picture of a society: What it's like to wake up in such surroundings, and what perspectives there are for a coming day.

Austria's largest housing complex erected in one building stage is situated in the northeast of Vienna. It lies on the former premises of a horse racetrack and comprises 2,400 flats. 59 blocks and long hall-like corridors lead more than 8,000 people to their living-rooms. When Mrs. Z. from the Viennese district of Meidling moved in with her 7 children, she was very happy with her new home. After two more children - the youngest child only 6 weeks old - she became a single mother. She likes the place, even though growing up here is difficult for her children. Mrs. G. left the province of Burgenland when the dream of a house of her own was shattered as a consequence of a building scandal. She lives together with her divorced husband. His brutality was the grounds for divorce. It´s a good place to live. Some years ago Mrs. W. was engaged in a lawsuit with the City of Vienna. She won and almost 40 million Austrian schillings for blown-up building cost and rents were paid back. Three people approached her in the middle of the night to say thank you. The postman for blocks 1 - 9 is surprised at the bad reputation of the estate because he knows other estates that are just as bad. Mrs. D moved in because her ex-husband had battered her children. Her son started taking drugs. Her new partner is from former Yugoslavia. She is annoyed because foreigners demand everything for themselves. At the moment the estate is being totally renovated. Thousands of windows have to be replaced by workers from Styria. They will stay for several years until work is finished here. Almost 1,800 children and young people live here. Building a campfire is a criminal act. Mr. D is caretaker and vice party district chairman. He thinks all that's missing is a prolongation of the underground network to Rennbahnweg. The film offers glimpses into the lives of more than 20 people, like mosaic stones: the life of an individual behind one of the countless doors shown. These lives in their entirety make up the overall picture of a society and its connections to the outside world. What does it mean to live in such a building? What is it like to wake up in such surroundings, what perspectives are there for a coming day?
