Synopsis:
Ten years after the arrest of Austrian letter bomber Franz Fuchs in October 1997 director Elisabeth Scharang unfurls the "Fuchs case" on the basis of the interrogation transcripts. The series of letter bombs which found its first victims in 1993 started a conflagration of unease and fear. Socially committed people, politcally liberal-minded ones and members of minorities were the targets of the ten first destructive letters. When the first letter bombs appeared in 1993 the question of "Foreigners" was being politically exploited at the time and in the countries of the former GDR Molotov cocktails were being thrown at the homes of asylum-seekers. No wonder therefore that even today, ten years after the arrest of Franz Fuchs, the letter-bomber, critical observers of the case do not believe all this was the work of a single perpetrator but rather that of an ultra right-wing extremist network.

When terrorist Franz Fuchs committed suicide in 2000 it seemed as if Austria had buried a painful chapter from its past. Filmmaker Elisabeth Scharang takes another look at the case. FRANZ FUCHS - A PATRIOT reveals new facets of the situation that go beyond the actual criminal case. A feature documentary film, this psychodrama of a lone perpetrator, which is interwoven with documentary sequences and archival material, becomes the first film to tackle this topic comprehensively, questioning the political climate in Austria and Europe as well as the story of an exceptionally talented person who ended up a terrorist instead of a nuclear physicist.

Franz Fuchs, the "letter-bomber", had left four people dead and fifteen wounded by the time he was apprehended in October 1997. The crimes he was convicted for are to this day of the gravest acts of terrorism in Austria's Second Republic. Franz Fuchs, who called himself an "Austrian terrorist", regarded his criminal activities as a service to a commiunity he tried to shield from foreign influences. The film follows the protocols tken during the interrogations.
