A View from a Hill (2005)
How different Fanshawe's holiday might have been had his trusty binoculars not broken. The Squire's archaic pair prove strangely bewitching, but is everything they see to be believed? And why does their very mention fill the elderly butler with dread? He looks like he's seen a ghost, or worse. Perhaps Fanshawe should have consulted the old man before venturing up Gallows Hill. Some stones are better left unturned, and questions of the dead should remain the secrets of the past, because sometimes the dead answer back...

A Warning to the Curious (1972)
The narrator begins the story by describing a windswept yet idyllic town on the coast of Suffolk, England called Seaburgh where he used to either live or visit as a child. After the narrator has evoked the setting of the story, he allows his friend to take over the narration. The friend tells of a stay in an inn in Seaburgh where he came across a very nervous-seeming young man who was afraid to be alone. This young man, Paxton by name, then tells his story of having learned from the local rector of a legend of three Anglian crowns buried along the coast as protection from foreign invaders. One crown, according to the legend, had been discovered and melted down, and the second had been washed into the sea by coastal erosion. The third crown, the last remaining defense, was still buried along the coast but protected by the men of the family Ager. When the clergyman casually announces that the last of the Agers has just died, Paxtons curiosity is piqued. When he ascertains from another local the possible location of the buried crown, he is compelled to unearth it. Having done so, however, he finds himself constantly followed by a mysterious presence. He is desperate to put the crown back where he found it, but it may be too late.

On his return to England he immediately sets about taking stock of all legal matters concerning his new property, but during these dealings Sir Richard seems to be more than a little distracted, he hears strange noises from the ash tree outside his bedroom window.

Christopher Lee's Ghost Stories for Christmas (2000)

Lost Hearts (1973)
Lost Hearts is a ghost story by M.R. James, found in his 1904 book Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. Stephen is repeatedly troubled by visions of two gypsy children with their hearts missing.

Number 13 (2006)
In order to authenticate some historical papers in a cathedral town, Oxbridge academic Anderson stays at a local hotel in room 12, initially disregarding the lack of a number 13 as provincial superstition. During the night, noise conspires to keep him awake and the historian is astonished to come face to face with door number 13. Continuing his work, a history of a reformation era witchcraft scandal emerges. The nocturnal disturbances escalate, leading Anderson with no choice but to open the door to room number 13...

The Stalls of Barchester (1971)
A mysterious box in the old library of Barchester Cathedral reveals the strange story leading up to the death of a former Archdeacon. From some old diaries, Dr Black, a scholar, pieces together a chain of events leading to a horrifying climax. As Dr Black delves deeper into the past a macabre explanation emerges.

The Treasure of Abbot Thomas (1974)
The Treasure of Abbot Thomas is a Ghost story written by M.R. James. It was published in his book Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. The original tale tells the story of Rev. Justin Somerton, a scholar of Medieval history, who tells a rector the tale of how, while searching an abbey library he had stumbled across, he found cues leading him to the hidden treasure of a disgraced abbot.

Whistle and I'll Come to You (1968)
The predecessor to the BBC's A Ghost Story for Christmas series, this 1968 adaptation of M.R. James' story ""O, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad"" was originally screened as part of the BBC's Omnibus series. It tells the tale of a socially isolated intellectual on holiday (Professor Parkins, played by Michael Hordern) who finds an old whistle while enjoying a coastal walk. After trying the whistle, he experiences increasingly disturbing nightmares which threaten his sanity.

Whistle and I'll Come to You (2010)

Walking on a deserted beach he finds a ring with a Latin inscription, which translates as Who Is This Who Is Coming. He takes the ring back to the hotel but at night he hears loud banging on his door, even though he is the sole guest, as well as seeing a white-clad apparition on the beach. He is seemingly the victim of ghostly revenge - but who is the avenger?
