Synopsis:
Season 4, Ep. 1
James McCready has served eight years of a life sentence for the murder of his partner, Gary Meadows. McCready has always claimed that the stabbing was a tragic accident and that the police inquiry, led by Det. Supt. Michael Walker, was prejudiced. Armed with new evidence, McCready's solicitor, Ben Duffield, and gay barrister and MP, Robert Rylands, join forces to campaign for an appeal.

Meanwhile, DI Pat North is chosen for a new Home Office scheme to fast-track talented detectives. To Walker's annoyance, she is placed on the re-investigation of the Meadows case along with her best friend Vivien. His career is flagging and North's success highlights his inadequacies and their differences. North, concerned about appearing biased, refuses to discuss the case with Walker and tempers fray. When Walker warns Satchell they must get their stories straight about Glasgow it is evident they are covering something up - but what?

Trial & Retribution is a feature-length ITV police procedural television drama series that began in 1997. It was devised and written by Lynda La Plante as a follow-on from her successful television series Prime Suspect. Each episode of the Trial & Retribution series is broadcast over two nights.

DI Pat North is assigned to look into case that may clear a man convicted of murder eight years ago.

Gary Meadows' daughter Fiona, who was only seven years old at the time of her father's death, comes forward,prepared to testify that she was present when Gary killed himself and she supports McCready's account of events. The case has become the subject of a crusading television documentary-drama, again in support of McCready. Vilified and suspended and at odds with Pat, Mike Walker goes to Glasgow to pursue his own private enquiries.
