Synopsis:
In 2011, the world will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the end of the division of Europe - indeed, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Iron Curtain are the most important historical events in post-war Europe. They shaped the face of Europe today. But why did the Soviet Empire collapse only 16 years later? What forces were there behind the creeping erosion and sudden collapse? Why could no one foresee the unthinkable? Produced in collaboration with Eastern European writers, directors and coproducers, this saga will be launched in 2011 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the USSR, the final act of the Cold War, an event that still today shapes our world order. The 6 x 52-minute TV series is at the core of the project. Farewell Comrades! Interactive is the second pillar of the media event. We will take the user on an interactive journey through our outstanding archive material to investigate the reasons, stories and theses behind the end of the superpower. A book published in several countries by renowned publishing house Beck will accompany the launch of the series and web format. Furthermore, as part of the project and in collaboration with institutional partners we will present a series of events, discussions, and presentations in all involved countries.

A transmedial documentary production about the final days of the Soviet system, told using old postcards. In 1975, almost half the world's population lived in a communist state. Only 16 years later, Gorbachev announced his resignation. How could the fall of the Soviet Empire happen so fast? Which forces caused this shift? And why did no one foresee the decline? This transmedial documentary production answers these questions by allowing not only those responsible within the system, but also 'regular' people to speak their minds. The postcards they sent between 1975 and 1991 are the connecting tissue between the various platforms: a chronological TV series in six episodes; a historical non-fiction book; an exhibition; a website; and a mobile app. In the online media, the starting point is always a postcard that you can select on a timeline, a map of Europe or through themes like the Cold War, secret services, love, and youth. In video messages, the original senders then reveal the how, the what, and the why of the card. Twenty years after the fact, they give a whole new meaning to the old socialist slogan: 'Ever forwards, never backwards!'

For the first time ever, this story, starting in 1975 to 1991, is told chronologically and from across and within the borders of all countries involved by the people who were there, who lived through it, who made it happen.
