David Mura's words accurately nail what Siboni's There is No Sexual Rapport is up to. Meet Hervé P. Gustave, or 'HPG', as the French porn king is known among friends. He cranked out many films; each film was apparently recorded by a second camera, from a slightly different angle. Raphaël Siboni takes this immense raw footage and turns it into something staggeringly unique. The film has everything a porn movie might have but filtered through a somewhat different perspective. Siboni brilliantly deconstructs the experience of pornography by simply altering the supremacy of the gaze, and turning its internal hierarchies upside down.

Illusion is the first of all pleasures. Nobody knows this better than Hervé P. Gustave, or 'HPG', as the French porn king is known among friends. The rest of the title probably speaks for itself. In the hands of the young visual artist Raphaël Siboni, several thousand hours of behind-the-scene and on-set footage of countless HPG low-budget productions have been turned into an unprejudiced and intelligent look at the most popular of all documentary genres, where the films are made on an assembly line and are consumed accordingly. However, by observing the events unfold in long and patient takes, illusion is the first thing to disappear. The participants gossip, chat, become bored and tired to the point of exhaustion with their bodies silently collapsing like in a Dalí painting.

For more than 10 years a stationary camera has been capturing the 'making of' moments on prolific French pornographer HPG's sets. Culled from thousands of hours of footage, There Is No Sexual Rapport shares the mundane, monotonous and momentous episodes that typically remain on the cutting room floor: spontaneous sex between costars when the cameras are done rolling; a pep talk on male confidence; a woman's glassy-eyed euphoria upon discovering her ability to ejaculate. HPG and his screen partners empower and titillate in videos inspired by real-life female sexual fantasies, and demystify the process of cheating fellatio, fake spanking and pounding versus penetration. This is a stunning mise en scène of orifices and accidental framing that exposes the delight (you might actually get turned on) and the tragedy (19-year-olds giving away so much of themselves for so little) involved in sex work.
