Synopsis:
A Special case of research on chaos theory: the film takes us on a journey through treasure chambers bursting at the seams with worthless objects, and presents compulsive hoarders as creative tinkerers, allowing us to share the deep conflicts they have with the world around them. Ulrich Grossenbacher followed the lives of four Swiss compulsive hoarders in the tidiest country in the world with his camera for three years. We see how they shape their lives with an amazing amount of imagination and creativity despite being constantly thwarted by the vehement arguments their excessive passion for collecting unleashes. With understanding and without being judgemental, the film shows the hoarders`cosmos, while gently reconsidering the existing norms of our consumer and throwaway society.

Farmer Arthur Santschi's unwieldy collection of rusting equipment has spread out over his estate, bringing down the wrath of his neighbors and an especially persnickety bureaucrat named Gerhard, who's determined to clean up the eyesore. Karl's stuff is literally pushing his wife Trudi away from him. Elmira has to pick her way around an apartment piled with tapes she's made of radio programs. Seemingly the most pragmatic, Thomas recycles stuff he finds to make interesting inventions. Helmer/lenser/co-writer Grossenbacher consistently coaxes revealing observations and expressive moments, like a near-final shot of Gerhard meticulously rolling up a discarded lead tube.

A complex insight into the everyday life of four hoarders. As we browse through their vast archives, we discover their treasure vaults, ingenious inventions and dangerous makeshift items. We also experience the conflicts that arise from their otherness when they have to deal with relatives, neighbors and institutions.
