Synopsis:

In this charming comedy, nine year old Paco believes his absent father is a Spanish pilot. He spends his days getting into trouble and his nights learning Spanish hoping one day he will be able to practice it with his dad. One night Ernesto (Demian Bichir) a Colombian pilot crashes his plane in the small Irish village where Paco and his mother live. Paco is called up as the sole Spanish speaker in town and becomes his translator. He manages to rewrite Ernesto's stories and turns him into a hero, motivating the entire town to come together to repair the plane and build a runway to ensure him a safe return home. Inspired by true events that happened outside Mallow in 1983 and captured the imagination of the nation.

In this charming comedy, Demián Bichir stars as Ernesto, a Colombian pilot whose plane has crashed in a small Irish village. Not able to speak a word of English, a precocious 9-year old boy named Paco, the only one in his town who knows Spanish, becomes his translator. Rewriting Ernesto's mysterious and questionable past, Paco turns him into a hero and a celebrity, motivating the entire town to rally behind Ernesto to help rebuild his plane. When a seedy Colombian detective arrives and threatens to reveal a dark secret about Ernesto, the town begins to question who they can trust. Inspired by true events, The Runway tells the story of a boy needing a father, a man wanting a family, and a town willing to do anything for a hero.

The Runway is inspired by the true story of a South American pilot who landed his plane near Mallow, in 1983. Against all odds, the people of the town came together to build a runway to get him home and briefly caught the imagination of the nation. It is the story of Paco, a young boy without a father who adopts the pilot and convinces the town to build a runway to get him home.
