Synopsis:

The most successful Swiss film in the past six years deals with a shameful chapter in the history of a country that is so often seen in a positive light. From the early 1800s to the 1950s thousands of Swiss children who were orphaned, illegitimate or from impoverished families were sent to work on farms as cheap labour. Set in the 1950s this deeply moving drama follows 12-year-old Max, an orphaned Verdingbub (discarded child) who suffers abuse at the hands of his host family while authorities turn a blind eye. With only his passion for playing the accordion and friendship with 15-year-old girl laborer Berteli to sustain him, Max's ordeal is one you won't soon forget. Talented newcomer Max Hubacher gives an extraordinary central performance in this searing examination of a subject that has rarely been discussed publicly until now.

Switzerland, 1955. The young orphan Max is sent as a foster child and contracted to work for the Bösiger family who lives on a farm. His foster parents treat him like a workhorse while their son seizes every opportunity to humiliate him. Playing the accordion is the one thing that is entirely his. But when the new teacher stands up for Max, it only makes a bad situation much worse. The only thing preserving his will to survive is his friendship with Berteli, who was also taken on to work at the farm. Max dreams of Argentina with her: a fantasy world, where allegedly even hayforks are made of silver.
