Synopsis:
This classic 1931 German adaptation of Eric Kastner's much-loved children's book was by Kastner himself and written by the legendary Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard, The Apartment) and an uncredited Emeric Pressburger (A Matter of Life and Death, Red Shoes). When young Emil is sent to Berlin by his mother the money he is carrying to give to his grandmother is stolen by a man on a train. Once in Berlin, Emil follows the thief and enlists the help of a gang of youngsters called 'the detectives' to help get his grandmother's money back. Thrilling entertainment for children and adults alike, Emil and the Detectives was one of the first German sound films ever produced, and offers a fascinating glimpse of Berlin before Nazism and the Second World War. This enduring story has been remade a number of times, including a 1964 Walt Disney version. This DVD includes the rare 1935 British adaptation, set on the streets of London, as an exclusive special feature.

No less a scrivener than Billy Wilder adapted the Erich Kastner novel Emil and the Detectives for its first film version. The story concerns a young boy named Emil who has been packed off to visit relatives in Germany. While en route on the train, Emil's money is stolen by a penny-ante thief. The boy enlists the aid of a group of pre-teen youths who fancy themselves ace detectives. The kids get in deeper than expected when it turns out that the thief is part of a criminal gang planning a big heist. The 1931 Emil and the Detectives is perhaps the best of the four film versions of the Kastner story, benefitting from some cheerful glimpses of a sunshine-drenched Berlin that disappeared forever during World War II.

Emil and the Detectives (German: Emil und die Detektive) is a 1931 German adventure film directed by Gerhard Lamprecht and starring Rolf Wenkhaus.
