Synopsis:
Widely considered to be one of Britain's greatest filmmakers, Humphrey Jennings has long been celebrated as the director of works which beautifully capture the everyday heroism in times of war and peace. This, the second of three volumes which collect together Jennings' entire output, gathers 5 films from 1941 -1943 and shows Jennings at the pinnacle of his career. It features his masterpieces Listen to Britain and Fires Were Started and the rousing Words for Battle as well as some previously neglected works and alternative versions, many of which are made available for the first time since their original release. List of Films: Fires Were Started (1943) The Heart of Britain (1941) Words for Battle (1941) Listen to Britain (1942) The Silent Village (1943)

Fires Were Started (1943)
A new man joins the civilian firefighters at a London unit during the Second World War. He meets his fellow firemen and firewomen, manages to enjoy some leisure time with them, and then goes on his first mission with the crew as it attempts to save an explosives warehouse on Trinidad Street near the London docks.
The Heart of Britain (1941)
This film shows scenes of devastation after a bombing raid on a British city, probably London in 1941. Dramatic music composed by Beethoven provides the sound track for these scenes of destruction.
Words for Battle (1941)
Poetry by Rudyard Kipling, John Milton, and William Blake, and excerpts from speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, all read by Laurence Olivier, illuminate documentary footage of England during its defense against the Nazi blitz in World War II. This short film serves as both propaganda and as a rallying cry to the British people.
Listen to Britain (1942)
A depiction of life in wartime England during the Second World War. Director Humphrey Jennings visits many aspects of civilian life and of the turmoil and privation caused by the war, all without narration.
The Silent Village (1943)
The true story of the massacre of a small Czech village by the Nazis is retold as if it happened in Wales.
