Synopsis:
An eternal dreamer, Billy Fisher is a likeable North Country lad with a habit of becoming lost in his own wild imagination. His flights of fancy do him no favours at the funeral parlour where he works and earn him continuous scorn from his boss, Mr. Shadrack. Life at home proves just as boring and his daydreaming provides a constant source of annoyance to his Dad. Adapted from the highly successful novel/play/film by successful writing team Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall (Budgie, Worzel Gummidge), this version of Billy Liar was updated by them to make it more relevant to the early 1970s, when it was made. As such, it's a unique and whimsical time capsule of a decade when flares were mandatory and hippies walked the streets. All of this counterpointed by Billy's flights of fancy! Featuring exceptional performances by Jeff Rawle (Drop the Dead Donkey, Spooks) as Billy, George A. Cooper (Z-Cars, Public Eye) as his Dad and Colin Jeavons (Sherlock Holmes, To Play the King) as the mortifying Mr. Shadrack, Billy Liar still remains one of the funniest shows from one of Britain's premier writing teams.

Billy, a young clerk in a North country firm of undertakers, is endowed with a vivid, childlike imagination which allows him to escape into his dream country, Ambrosia, whenever the responsibilities of adult life become too great. He is unable to tell the sober truth and his inventive lies lead him into hopeless difficulties at work and at home. He dreams of becoming a scriptwriter and tries to interest a well-known visiting comedian. He becomes engaged to two girls at once and really loves a third, Liz, who persuades him to go to London with her. Billy's courage fails him and at the last moment he finds some pretext to jump off the train. He watches it go and then marches home, accompanied by an imaginary retinue, to his unsympathetic parents.
