Synopsis:
This Dual Format Edition completes the BFI's acclaimed Complete Humphrey Jennings collection, making available all the films directed by Britain's greatest filmmakers available on Blu-ray and DVD. The films of Humphrey Jennings have proved hugely influential over the last 60 years - his influence can be felt in the work of Lindsay Anderson (If....) and more recent filmmakers, such as Kevin MacDonald (Touching the Void, Marley). Jennings was also a major influence for Frank Cottrel Boyce and Danny Boyle, whose 2012 Olympics ceremony used Jennings' book, Pandæmonium, as its inspiration. Volume three includes the following films: The Eighty Days (1944) A Diary for Timothy (1945) A Defeated People (1946) The Cumberland Story (1947) The Dim Little Island (1949) Family Portrait (1950)

A Diary for Timothy (1946)
This brief documentary-style film presents the status of Great Britain near the end of the Second World War by means of a visual diary for a baby boy born in September, 1944. Narration explains to "Timothy" what his family, his neighbors, and his fellow citizens are going through as the war nears its end, and what problems may remain for new Englishmen like Timothy to solve.
The True Story of Lilli Marlene (1944)
Written and directed by Humphrey Jennings of the Crown Film Unit (also known as GPO Film Unit), The True Story of Lili Marlene was released in 1944 and given a 'U' Rating by the British Board of Film Censors. Introduced by the actor Marius Goring the film depicts how an obscure pre-war song recorded in German by Lale Anderson became the unofficial anthem of both the Axis and Allied Forces after being broadcast by the German Forces Radio Broadcasts from Radio Belgrade.
The Eighty Days (1944)
A brief survey of the V.1 bombardment of London and elsewhere during the summer of 1944, with a detailed sequence showing some of the defensive operations used during one such attack.
Myra Hess (1945)
Piano virtuosa Myra Hess performs Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, known as the "Appassionata", on stage in a concert hall. Hess performs only the first movement of the sonata.
A Defeated People (1946)
A film directed by Humphrey Jennings about the government of the British-occupied zone of Germany. Various aspects of the knotty problem of physical and moral rehabilitation of Germany and the German people are touched upon. There are the immense difficulties of war damage and of Displaced Persons, of transporting coal to the parts where it is most needed, of setting up adequate courts of justice, of coping with ration and health difficulties, above all of educating and re-educating the Germans to new and better ideals.
The Cumberland Story (1947)
A film about the revitalisation of a coalmine, documenting the events leading up to nationalisation and the arguments for it.
The Dim Little Island (1949)
Two features. 'Our Country' follows a sailor as he travels around the country during the Second World War. Features words by Dylan Thomas. Also features 'The Dim Little Island' which explores the opinions of four men on the past, present and future.
Family Portrait (1950)
In preparation for the celebration of the 1951 Festival of Britain, this short film was released to assure British citizens of their nation's place in the world and of their own places within that nation. Illustrative scenes of farming, science, political, and social life are juxtaposed to present a familiar and reassuring image of Britain.
