Synopsis:
Timid and self-deprecating, Judith Hearne (Dame Maggie Smith) is a middle-aged piano teacher living in 1950s Dublin. A spinster who yearns for more from her small world, she finds appeal in her new boarding-house neighbour James Madden (Bob Hoskins). A former New York City hotel doorman with a sketchy past, Madden sets about courting Judith in an attempt to bring joy and fulfilment back into her life. But as their innocent friendship develops, soon a shadow of betrayal casts doubt between them when she suspects that he is more interested in her money than her heart. Based on the novel by Brian Moore, The Lonely Heart of Judith Hearne is a heartfelt tale of old-fashioned romance amidst a spiritual crisis, where perception may indeed only be skin deep.

Judith Hearne (Maggie Smith) is a middle-aged 'maiden lady' piano teacher living in 1950s Dublin. Timid and self-deprecating, Judith permits herself to yearn over her new boarding-house neighbor, hotel entrepreneur Bob Hoskins. Hoskins thinks that Judith has enough money to bankroll his latest scheme, so he decides to return her affections. Judith, blind to Hoskin's duplicity, convinces herself that she's finally found true love. The shattering of her illusions drives Judith to drink--and, unexpectedly, to a more fulfilling new life. Based on the novel by Brian Moore, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne is typical of the 'muted emotion' ouevre of director Jack Clayton.

A penniless middle-aged spinster scrapes by giving piano lessons in the Dublin of the 1950s. She makes a sad last bid for love with a fellow resident of her rundown boarding house, who imagines she has the money to bankroll the business he hopes to open.
