Synopsis:
Daniel Schmid, who grew up during the 1940s in a Belle Epoque hotel at Flims in the Grisons mountains, succumbed to the powers of the imagination already as a child. Spurred by his grandmother's fantastic stories, he made the hotel foyer his stage and its international array of guests his protagonists. Daniel Schmid became a storyteller - and remained one all his life.Daniel Schmid - The Thinking Cat is a kaleidoscopic portrait of the eventful life and unusual work of an outstanding Swiss film artist.

Even as a child, Daniel Schmid knew that there was a hidden world, caught between reality and imagination. Jaberg and Hofmann's film takes us on a cinematic journey through the life and work of Daniel Schmid, one of the most unusual artists within Swiss film. Born into a hotelier family of the 1940s in the village of Flims, surrounded by snow covered mountains, visited by exotic guests from around the world, Daniel Schmid always was a dreamer. As a boy he told stories to his grandmother and with the hotel lobby as his stage he became a storyteller to remain so for the rest of his life. The young filmmakers offer a mysterious kaleidoscope of people and places related to the director.

This documentary about Daniel Schmid, director and friend of R.W. Fassbinder and W. Schroeter plunges us into the effervescent creativity of 1970s Germany. Thanks to numerous sequences extracted from his films, in his company or that of his numerous collaborators (Ingred Caven, Bulle Ogier…) we undertake a magnificent cinematic voyage into the life and works of one of the most original artists Switzerland has given us.
