Synopsis:
This bold and exciting series brings Britain's tumultuous history to vivid life in an exciting new style combining gripping drama, spectacular CGI and compelling commentary. The seven-part series takes viewers on an amazing journey from the Roman invasion to the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953, looking at the people and events that shaped the nation. Surprising and thought-provoking, The British focuses not only on the battles, monarchs and leaders who have shaped our history, but also on the reformers, inventors, pioneers and unsung heroes who changed the face of Britain. Bringing history to life as never before, The British features sumptuous re-enactments of the decisive moments in our past, and contributions from celebrities, sporting heroes, politicians and leading academics.
List of Episodes:
Treasure Islands
People Power
Revolution

Superpower
Tale of Two Cities
War and Peace

This is just the kind of series you look to the BBC to produce, but in this case, it's Sky Atlantic that's brought it to life. And one thing you can't fault The British for is its sheer scope and ambition. Its job? To tell the story of the British Isles' history, spanning back some 2000 years. To do this, it brings in a mixture of tricks, from utilising computer generated effects and drama, to informative, interesting voiceover. It moves at breathtaking speed at times, which is perhaps understandable given how much they're trying to cram into seven episodes. It's hard to complain about just how much you get for your money, here, even if keeping up can be the occasional challenge. The programme covers many key events in British history. With plenty of input from familiar faces, it takes the era of the Roman invasion, and brings things as up to date as it can. The journey of The British takes in what's built Great Britain up, and the people, royal and otherwise, who have helped forge its position in the world. And it's keen to do this in as engaging a way as possible. It succeeds in its goal. There are, clearly, far more in-depth ways to familiarise yourself with the history of Britain. But The British's whistle-stop tour approach bundles together a lot of information in a thoroughly entertaining package. Warmly recommended, especially as a primer for finding out more.
