Synopsis:
Demy's last film is a retrospective, self-reflexive tribute to the romance of show business. Yves Montand stars as himself, returning to his hometown of Marseille to rehearse an autobiographical revue. When his costar abruptly quits, a new leading lady arrives in the form of a stagestruck gamine-who, unbeknownst to the characters themselves, may be Montand's illegitimate daughter. In Demy's particular brand of backstage musical, singing shopgirls in gaily colored dresses dream of instant stardom and get it, while the suggestion of incest is merely a complication en route to a happy ending. Michel Legrand's music meets the MTV eighties in dance numbers by Michael Peters, choreographer for Michael Jackson.

The legendary Yves Montand as the legendary Yves Montand, returning to his hometown Marseilles for a revival tour, demonstrating the Astaire cane twirl (two fingers, thumb); re-telling the tale of how Ivo Livi became Montand; and, fictionally, beginning a May-December romance while searching for a lost love - only trouble is, May turns out to be love's daughter.

In a charming mixture of fantasy and reality, this film recalls the great musicals of Hollywood's Golden Age. Yves Montand, playing himself, returns to his hometown of Marseilles to appear in an autobiographical musical. Once there, he searches for the barmaid he once loved and also encounters young hopeful Marion, giving her the chance of a lifetime.
