Synopsis:
Sterling Hayden: He worked with Stanley Kubrick in The Killing and Dr Strangelove, Francis Ford Coppola in The Godfather, John Huston in The Asphalt Jungle and Robert Altman in The Long Goodbye. The myth of Sterling Hayden fascinates many today and this remarkable self-portrait documentary is available to be seen for the first time since its original theatrical run in 1983 with this special edition DVD release. Even by Hollywood's standards Hayden was more than just another difficult star. His swashbuckling macho arrogance, self-destructive, guilt-ridden psyche and charming, self-deprecating sense of humour contribute to a larger than life story - one befitting the 6'5' sailor turned actor billed by the studios in 1940 as 'the most beautiful man in the movies'. This feature length documentary shot on Hayden's barge somewhere along the rivers of France in 1982 recounts the extraordinary events of his life with a no holds barred candour from his early sailing experiences, adventures with Yugoslav partisans during World War 2, Communist sympathies and his subsequent confession to the House of Un-American Activities Committee and his lifelong struggle with alcoholism.

DOCUMENTARY film making is at its most laissez faire in ''Pharos of Chaos,'' a profile of the actor Sterling Hayden by the West German film makers Wolf-Eckart Buhler and Manfred Blank. Mr. Hayden - disdainful of his acting career, ashamed of having named names before the House Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950's and tremendously proud of his accomplishments as a seafarer - is undoubtedly a very interesting man.

Documentary profile of actor Sterling Hayden.
