Synopsis:

Vicious tells the story of partners Freddie (Ian McKellen) and Stuart (Derek Jacobi), two men who have lived together in a small central London flat for nearly 50 years. Constantly picking each other apart and holding on to petty slights for decades, we can still see that underneath all their vicious co-dependent fighting they have a deep love for each other. Into their world steps a young man, Ash (Iwan Rheon), as their new upstairs neighbour. Joining Freddie and Stuart is feisty best friend Violet (Frances de la Tour), young at heart and with a deliciously dry sense of humour.

Freddie Thornhill,a retired actor,and ex-bar manager Stuart Bixby have been a couple for over forty years but have never stopped bitching in all that time. Under protest Freddie allows Stuart to take him to a department store to buy a new coat to wear at a Doctor Who fan club event - Freddie having been voted the tenth most popular villain of all time. Later Violet takes young Ash to the same store - ostensibly for a wardrobe to reconcile him with his girlfriend though she really wants to see him in Speedos - and is surprised to see Stuart there too. Since Stuart had lied about his whereabouts Freddie suspects infidelity but it turns out that Stuart was only working in the store to get money to buy the coat.

Freddie has no time to comfort Violet,dumped by her Hungarian boyfriend,as he is preparing for his role as 'Cookstaff Number Four' in television's 'Downton Abbey'.Then Ash,on Freddie's advice,also gets an acting part,a fact which so depresses Freddie he is actually nice to everybody. Of course,when Ash gets the sack,Freddie reverts to his old self before he and Stuart settle down to watch 'Downton Abbey'.

Ash gets a job handing out flyers for a club in Soho and invites Freddie and Stuart and their friends along. Stuart decides it is not for him after a girl makes a pass at him but Freddie revels in showing off to Ash's trendy young friends. However even he soon finds it hard going to keep up with them. Fortunately,inspired by wise words from Penelope - although she gets his name wrong - Stuart goes after Freddie and they prove that they can still move on the dance floor. Returning home they get a message from Violet,who has pursued her latest flame to Buenos Aires.

Freddie and Stuart invite Ash and his new girlfriend Chloe for dinner. Unfortunately the two older men find her extremely irritating as she is a tee-total vegan who is cloyingly over-affectionate to Ash. They are convinced that she is not right for Ash and even take time off from insulting each other to get her drunk and bring out the worst in her. Meanwhile Violet phones from Argentina,where she is literally tied up and is asking for help.

Freddie and Stuart plan a small party to celebrate forty-nine years of being together. Violet has returned from Argentina for the event and is shocked when Ash alerts Stuart's mother Mildred to the fact as she is unaware that Stuart is gay. Freddie has also invited Judi Dench as they made a Smarties advert together 50 years earlier though nobody believes she will turn up. Mildred duly arrives and proceeds to criticize Stuart but Freddie amazes everybody by defending him and declaring how proud he is to have him as a lover. The party over, the telephone answering ...

Stuart and Ian invite their friends for Christmas. Ash, whose parents are in prison, is very grateful and offers to cook the turkey. Violet announces that she is bringing her latest boyfriend - who is very 'big' - but argues with him on the door-step and comes in on her own. During a game of Truth or Dare Freddie is shocked to learn that Stuart and Penelope had sex fifty years ago whilst Ash has a mishap with the turkey, thanks to the couple's dog, and Christmas dinner turns out to be sandwiches, during which Mason rings in a temper because Penelope forgot to collect ...

Freddie and Stuart are an old gay couple who have been together for nearly 50 years. Their lives now revolve around entertaining their frequent guests and hurling insults at each other at every opportunity.
