Synopsis:
The Big City (1963)
Life at home changes when a housewife from a middle-class, conservative family in Calcutta gets a job as a salesperson.
The Lonely Wife (1964)
The lonely wife of a newspaper editor falls in love with her visiting cousin-in-law, who shares her love for literature.
The Coward (1965)
A successful screenwriter (Soumitra Chatterjee) is traveling the country researching his next script when his car breaks down in a small town. The owner (Haradhan Bannerjee) of a nearby tea estate offers him a place to stay for the night, and the writer is surprised to discover that his former lover (Madhabi Mukherjee) is now married to the man. Ray makes the most out of this small cast and short time (the film takes place over the course of one day) to create an indelible portrait of missed opportunities.
The Holy Man (1965)
A devout Hindu family falls victim to a charlatan posing as a holy man.
The Hero (1966)
En route to Delhi to receive an award, a Bengali film star reevaluates his success through his fellow passengers, dreams and past experiences.

Satyajit Ray is internationally acknowledged as one of the great masters of world cinema, with an artistic legacy that ranks as one of the most formidable in all of film history.
Exceptionally versatile, his films covered almost every conceivable genre, winning him nearly every major cinema award - including an Oscar® for lifetime achievement - as well as legions of admirers, among them Akira Kurosawa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, V.S. Naipaul and Martin Scorsese. Meticulously restored from the original negatives and presented in high definition for the first time in the UK, this collection serves as a fitting tribute to one of cinema's most important figures.
THE BIG CITY (Mahanagar)
Finding it difficult to make ends meet on her husband's salary alone, a housewife takes up a job as a sales woman and finds that she revels in her new-found freedom. But her independence and burgeoning confidence alarms her traditionalist family and threatens to throw her life into chaos.
THE LONELY WIFE (Charulata)
When an ambitious newspaper journalist senses his wife's loneliness he enlists the help of his cousin, a sensitive would-be writer, to keep her company. But upon meeting the pair feel an immediate connection and their feelings quickly and almost inevitably begin to deepen…
THE COWARD (Kapurush)
Stranded in a small village when his car breaks down, a screenwriter is shocked by a surprise meeting with his former lover. Recalling his inability to commit to her and the relationship's resultant breakdown, he attempts to make amends for the past but finds time hasn't healed the wounds.
THE HOLY MAN (Mahapurush)
Depressed and alone after the death of his wife, a devoutly religious retiree meets a holy man and decides to join his band of affluent disciples. But when he enlists the guru's help in finding his daughter a husband she rebels and sets out to expose the holy man as a fraudster.
THE HERO (Nayak)
On board a train to an awards ceremony, a famous Bengali movie star meets a young journalist who is unimpressed by his egotism and celebrity. Deciding to carry out an interview regardless, a rapport develops between the two and the film star reveals rather more of his inner self than intended...

The Big City (1963)
Calcutta in the early 1960's. Bhambal supports his wife Arati, his parents, and two children. Money is tight, so Arati goes to work. She's successful and enjoys it, but this untraditional step throws the household into chaos: her in-laws initiate a "cold war" of silence and disapproval. When Bhambal loses his job, her working is essential; he loses self respect, and the gulf between them widens. Arati questions whether to keep her daughter in school. At work, her friendship with Edith, a Euro-Indian who smokes, swears, and uses lipstick, brings Arati close to impertinence with her genial boss. Her job is imperiled, she acts impulsively, and who will understand her actions?
The Lonely Wife (1964)
Charu lives a lonely and idle life in 1870s India. Although her husband Bhupati devotes more time to his newspaper than to their marriage, he sees her loneliness and asks his brother-in-law,Umapada to keep her company. At the same time Bhupati's own brother, Amal, a would-be writer comes home finishing his college education. However, after several months, Charu and Amal's feelings for each other move beyond literary friendship.
The Coward (1965)
Amitabha Roy (Soumitra Chatterjee), a sriptwriter has a breakdown near a tea-estate and he is offered a place to stay by the estate manager (Haradhan Banerjee) at his bungalow. When he reaches, Amitabha finds out that the manager is married to his ex-girlfriend, Karuna (Madhabi Mukherjee). The manager has invited Amitabha to assuage his own boredom # and fails to notice the uneasiness between his wife and the guest. The plot unfolds over a period of approximately one-day when they have dinner, breakfast and go for a picnic # and small gestures rekindle Amitabha's memories. Through a series of flashbacks, he remembers their first meeting, courtship and separation (which was solely because of his lack of courage to make a commitment). Amitabha's current affluence and his suspicion of Karuna's unhappiness leads him to propose to Karuna once again but she is inclined to believe that the time to muster up courage has gone past.
The Holy Man (1965)
A retired lawyer meets a holy man Birinchi Baba (Charuprakash Ghosh) and his assistant (Robi Ghosh) on his way back from a pilgrimage and is totally taken in by his supernatural life. The holy man is on first name terms with Buddha and all the gods of the Hindu pantheon. What the world calls 'Cruci-fiction' he calls 'Cruci-fact' because he has seen it with his own eyes! He even starts giving orations to an audience of the rich and famous at the lawyer's residence. The gullible lawyer decides to get his entire family initiated into the guru's fold including his unmarried younger daughter (Gitali Roy) who is being courted by a young man (Satindra Bhattacharya). His group of intelligent and rationalist friends (Somen Bose et al) decide to take matters in their own hands and hatch a plot to expose the smooth-talking charlatan.
The Hero (1966)
A matinee idol Arindam Mukherjee (Uttam Kumar) is going by train to collect an acting award. On the train, he is confronted by a journalist Aditi (Sharmila Tagore) who somewhat unwillingly starts to take his interview. Arindam, won over by Aditi's naivete, starts to disclose his past, his fears and his secrets. On a parallel track, a number of sub-plots unfold (involving an advertising executive and his wife, a businessman and his family, a silent swami and a cranky old man) to reveal the hypocrisies and frailties of the society. The film reaches a climax when Arindam, overcome by his guilt, contemplates suicide and is dissuaded by Aditi. The next morning, Aditi who had surreptitiously taken notes of their conversation destroys them - not wanting to reveal Arindam's darkest secrets. When the train reaches its destination, Arindam alights and is surrounded by his fans and is back to his normal star self where there is no place for guilt, confessions and Aditi.
