Synopsis:

Director Ryohei Watanabe's debut film concerns two teenage girls and their friendship. The first is Misa, a stocky girl who is viciously dubbed 'Pooh' at school, due to her surname 'Kumada' (bear + rice paddy) and masculine frame. She obviously has no friends and can only let down her guard around her pet parrot and the goldfish in the science room at school. The other is Izumi, a cute and popular classmate who says she can't make and keep friends because all the other girls are jealous of her looks.
The two become best of friends owed to them both being such firm outsiders. Although somewhat puzzled by Izumi's interest in her, Misa is excited about having a friend for the first time ever. Their blossoming friendship starts off as endearing but as the two spend more and more time together the sheen of the relationship peels away and Izumi's initial angelic demeanor gradually transforms into a demonic one. And as that darkness and violence eventually bleed into the mix, what could just be another tale of teenage friendship gone awry becomes a genuinely disturbing thriller.

Teased by her peers and with no friends of her own, Misa can't believe her luck when the pretty and popular Izumi takes her under her wing. Friendship blossoms, but there's more to her new schoolmate than meets the eye - as Misa will discover to her peril. Adolescent friendships are some of the most intense we ever experience, making writer/director Ryohei Watanabe's tale of teenage obsession discomfortingly naturalistic right up to the final moments. Text messages, private jokes and other realistic touches draw us ever deeper into this increasingly off-kilter world, while the agony and ecstasy of high-school life are perfectly captured against a backdrop of understated and elegant cinematography.
