Synopsis:
The Century of Cartier-Bresson: Pierre Assouline brings back to life one of the most famous French photographers, who recounts his vision of the 20th century via his images. This film is an opportunity to review Cartier-Bresson's outstanding career. He was an eyewitness to the major events that marked his era, such as the Spanish Civil War, the Liberation of Paris, the birth of the People's Republic of China and the May 1968 events in France. Always on the lookout, in perpetual motion, Henri Cartier-Bresson was the photographer of decisive moments. His biographer of reference retraces the outstanding destiny of the man who was nicknamed 'the eye of the century'. Contacts: Henri Cartier-Bresson: Henri Cartier-Bresson explains: 'A contact sheet is a sort of seismograph that records the moment. It's highly indiscrete, featuring everything what surprised us, what we captured in flight, what we missed, what has disappeared, or an event that unfolds until it becomes an image that is a culmination.'

A major biographer of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Pierre Assouline, brings to life the most famous French photojournalist, for whom "the lens is only an extension of the eye." Coproduced by: ARTE France, Cinétévé (2012, 52 min) DVD extra: in the "CONTACTS" collection Henri Cartier-Bresson - Réalisation: Robert Delpire, 1994 For Cartier-Bresson, a photographer since 1931 and the co-founder of the Magnum agency, universally known and fiercely secretive... the photograph "is putting the head, the eye and the heart in the same line of vision. It is a way of living."
