Synopsis:
Molly Maxwell, Canadian director Sara St. Onge's directorial debut, is a tender, comedic coming-of-age story about a girl who finds herself and learns to make her own decisions. Sixteen-year-old Molly attends the Phoenix Progressive School, a private arts school full of prodigies who vie to outdo one another creatively. Molly flounders, feeling she isn't unique enough and doesn't fit in. Encouraged by her ultra-liberal parents (Dad's a record-company exec and Mom's an artist) to be someone brilliant, Molly feels like she doesn't measure up, and waffles choosing her concentration. But she must choose one to graduate, so she feigns an interest in photography to take a class with young and attractive teacher Ben. Ben accepts her as she is, and his acceptance opens her world. His attention and approval unlock her true potential, igniting her interest in school and in life, and Molly flourishes. Their relationship quickly moves beyond the darkroom, and Molly pursues an impossible romance with Ben. As played by Lola Tash, who handles the line between self-conscious teenager and seductive woman perfectly, Molly's first-love awkwardness is at times comedic, at times beautiful. As Molly and Ben's relationship becomes more intimate, Molly begins to put herself on the line and jeopardizes Ben's career, too.

At Phoenix Progressive School, where everyone tries to outdo each other with creative self-expression, 16-year-old Molly Maxwell (Lola Tash) would rather be invisible than risk revealing herself as completely ordinary. When her young, handsome, disillusioned English teacher (Charlie Carrick) enters the picture and allows her to just be herself, Molly is suddenly able to flourish. As their student-teacher bond becomes more intimate, she begins putting herself on the line in unexpected ways while pursuing what she wants. But with each awkward, beautiful step towards an impossible romance, Molly risks alienating everyone she loves.

Phoenix Progressive School is an alternative high school in Toronto where every student is treated like a 'unique snowflake'. In a school of prodigies and individuals, Molly Maxwell can't seem to find her place. Her radically liberal parents push her to be extraordinary and her teachers want her to choose a path. Forced to make a decision, Molly chooses to take photography as an elective with a young and attractive teacher, Ben Carter. Ben opens up her world, energizing her about school and life like never before but their complicated relationship puts both their futures in jeopardy.
