Synopsis:
The year I turned 17, in 1993, my father died of mesothelioma, a pleural cancer caused by asbestos. From that day on, worry has never left me. I recently found his diary. And from his entries I made this film. To cut one's losses means to sacrifice what seems trivial to save what is essential. Asbestos protected from nearly everything, at a low cost, for maximum profit, which was essential. The risks to public health were known but ignored. Its massive use kept feeding a terrible fire, less immediate, less visible, insidious. This film explores a fire that can no longer be ignored. My father was only one of many victims. My worry has led me to discover the personal and very real consequences of this collective story. I wanted to study asbestos on a very personal, human level.

The part of fire is what we sacrifice in order to save an essential element. Asbestos protected almost everything, for less cost and maximum profit. It was essential. The part of fire is the echo of my father's words, those of a teacher whose death was caused by a mesothelioma, asbestos-related cancer, workers' cancer. The part of fire is the worry that accompanies me since his death, which I've decided to confront today in contaminated landscapes, alongside those who share the same feelings, so that together we may change our fear into action.

La part du feu - a French expression which denotes what must be sacrificed to save that which is essential. For many years, asbestos was a cost-effective way of fireproofing buildings, but whilst it undoubtedly saved many lives, it also claimed others. This film was inspired by the personal experiences of one filmmaker, whose father was stricken with an asbestos-induced cancer...
