Synopsis:
The Melbourne-filmed adaptation of Robin Klein's much-loved 1985 novel tells the story of Erica (Saskia Burmeister), a prickly, smart, disaffected teenager with a penchant for hypochondria and a gift for fantasy. Erica's life is turned upside-down when a new girl arrives at school: Alison Ashley (Goodrem), clever, well-bred, well-behaved, well-off and seemingly in possession of every virtue, talent and good fortune that Erica could aspire to. Suddenly, Erica's self-appointed roles as classroom star and future Juliet in the school production of Romeo and Juliet seem to be in doubt. But nothing, in the world of adolescent insecurities and excesses, is quite as it seems...

Hating Alison Ashley is a coming of age story about teenagers dealing with their self-inflicted angst, their embarrassing parents, their friends and those they would call their enemies. Erica Yurken's life sucks: her family is an embarrassment, her acting genius is unrecognized and because of her name, she is nicknamed 'Yuk'. So from the moment the perfect Alison Ashley arrives at school, Yuk knows there is going to be trouble. Yuk has always felt superior to everyone at Barringa East, but Alison is everything Yuk has ever wanted to be

Classmates Erica Yurgen and Alison Ashley vie with each other to become the undisputed star of their class.
