Synopsis:
Anglo-Indian Queenie Kelly has been passing for white - but her act nearly comes to an end when she incurs the wrath of fellow schoolmate Prunella Rumsey. It seems Prunella's father died while in Queenie's company - as he was trying to have his way with her. To escape the repercussions of this tragedy, Queenie and her mother flee India for England. Once there, Queenie changes her name to Dawn Avalon and gets a job dancing in a nightclub. Her alluring routine attracts movie producer David Konig, who offers her a starring role in his grand epic. Unfortunately, the film is shooting in India, where Prunella remains, still awaiting vengeance. And now that Queenie's on her way to stardom, Prunella knows exactly what she can do to ruin her nemesis's life: reveal the true racial background of the 'white' Dawn Avalon...

A half-caste beauty emigrates from India to Great Britain, pursues fame and fortune at the cost of personal happiness, and becomes a Hollywood movie star while suppressing the truth of her heritage.

Based on the fictionalised biography of Merle Oberon by Michael Korda.
