Synopsis:
Olof lives alone on his family's farm after the death of his mother. Unable to read and write, he is dependent on his younger friend, Erik, who helps him in the afternoons. Once a sailor, Erik brags of having known hundreds of women. Out of the blue, Olof advertises in the local paper for a young lady housekeeper, and Ellen, a middle-class city woman, arrives to take over the house and, as the summer goes on, Olof's heart and Erik's desire as well.

In the book 'The Craft of the Screenwriter,' Paddy Chayefsky contended that his mope-fest 'Marty' was actually supposed to be a comedy. Chayefksy maintained that people missed the point. If we apply the same perspective to 'Under the Sun,' a runny melodrama featuring a middle-aged virgin built like a side of beef who finally finds love despite the constant assaults on his fragile pride, then the picture is still not very good. It has the melancholy mildew of both 'Marty' and the 1940's weepie 'The Enchanted Cottage,' scored with piercing, forlorn tin-whistle and sad fiddle by Paddy Maloney of the Chieftains.

Middle aged Olof is a shy virgin, living on a farm with only the younger Erik for a friend. Erik claims to have slept with thousands of women, and he needs Olof's inexperience to play off his own cocky and manipulative style. When Olof advertises for a housekeeper, he meets the beautiful and mysterious Ellen. The two become lovers, much to Erik's dismay. Gradually, the precarious emotional balance that kept the two men friends is skewed and Erik decides to discover Ellen's true motivations.
