Synopsis:
A Dinner of Herbs (2000)
Six-part television adaptation of the novel by the late Catherine Cookson. In nineteenth century Northumberland, Roddy Greenbank's father meets a violent end shortly after he arrives to live with him. Roddy is taken in by his father's close friend Kate Makepeace, and forges strong bonds with locals Hal and Mary Ellen. However, as they get older, the friendship between the trio comes under increasing pressure, as Roddy's artistic ambitions and Hal's vengeful nature lead to conflict between the pair.
The Cinder Path (1994)
Tale of a farmer's son who gets involved with two sisters, then goes to fight in the trenches in WW1.
The Dwelling Place (1994)
Set in the 1830's, the film tells the story of 16-year-old Cissie Brodie after the death of parents, and the repossession of the family home. She finds a barren place to live and care for her younger brothers and sisters with the help of Matthew, a local carpenter, but her life becomes complicated when the aristocratic Fischel family take an unwelcome interest.

A Dinner of Herbs (2000)
Sometimes friendship has a bitter taste.
The Cinder Path (1994)
Edward MacFell is a prosperous Northumberland farmer with a sadistic bent. He routinely hurts and humiliates family members and workers alike. When he goes too far, he becomes the victim of a murder made to appear an accident. His mild-mannered son Charlie witnesses the crime and protects the killer in the name of friendship and justice. But there is still another witness, Ginger Slater, an embittered farm hand with blackmail on his mind. Charlie is inveigled into a disastrous marriage with Victoria Chapman, the promiscuous county belle, unaware that her sister Nellie is in love with him. Then comes the war. When Charlie tires of his sister's carping and his wife's infidelities, he signs up--as an enlisted man, and finds himself in the charge of a sergeant with an axe to grind: Sgt. Ginger Slater.
The Dwelling Place (1994)
Set in rural Northumberland during the 1830s, this Catherine Cookson story tells of Cissie Brodie's struggle to keep the family intact when the sudden death of her parents causes them to be evicted from their cottage. Local carpenter Matthew helps Cissie look after her five brothers, and eventually falls in love with her, but Cissie becomes pregnant after being raped by a local aristocrat.
