Synopsis:
Adolpho Arrietta was a major figure in the new cinemas that appeared in the sixties and seventies in various countries. Thus he became one of the fundamental film directors in the history of Spanish cinema. As with Bunuel, a long exile seems to have been the condition that allowed his work to keep up with the most important trends in the cinema of his era. Throughout the seventies he produced a series of "punk a la francaise" films, as Severo Sarduy called them, which for their originality and influence are among the most important in French cinema of that decade. In 1989 he returned to Madrid, and despite noteable intervals, which other Spanish film directors of his generation also experienced, his work proceeded. Alone, like in the era of El crimen de la pirindola but with a digital camera, he produced what for the moment is his latest film: Vacanza permanente (2006). This is the complete works of this filmmaker, considered the pioneer of independent cinema in Spain and hailed by artists and critics such as Jonas Mekas, Marguerite Duras or Serge Daney.

DVD 1

A young boy plays with a top instead of doing his homework and daydreams about his brother and his brother's girlfriend.
Imitacion del angel / Imitation of the Angel. 1967. Spain. 21 min.
Surreal experimental film in which angels take part in a murder.
Le Jouet criminel / The Criminal Toy. 1969. France. 37 min.

Vacanza permanente / Permanent Vacation. 2006. Spain. 40 min.
In his latest essay Vacanza Permanente, Arrietta discovers and enthusiastically embraces digital editing at home.
DVD 2
Pointilly. 1972. France. 30 min.
"At any rate, it's about a father, a father's reign over destiny. Whether or not this father is terrestrial or has a name concerns us insofar as we may or may not cling to the illusion of clarity, to the ingenuity of reason."
Flammes. 1978. France. 82 min.
A girl's obsession with firemen causes her to start a fire at her own home in order to trap a fireman in her room.
DVD 3
Las intrigas de Sylvia Couski / The Adventures of Sylvia Couski. 1974. France. 73 min.
Adolfo Arrieta's third feature film stars famed French transsexual and founding member of the FHAR (Homosexual Front for Revolutionary Action), Marie-France, and is widely regarded as the first Parisian underground film. The loose plot revolves around the ex-wife of a famous sculptor who convinces her lover to remove a work by her ex-husband and replace it with a live model. "Its subject is the Paris transvestite scene and it's depicted with the flair of Jack Smith, the directness of Andy Warhol, and the special tenderness of Arrieta. I salute the Poet." - Jonas Mekas, February, 1975.
Tam Tam. 1976. France. 60 min.
Marginal wildlife (read: artists and transvestites) of Saint-Germain-des-Pres are throwing a party to honor a handsome stranger who's eagerly expected but actually never arrives.
"For a few months - the time it took to film Tam Tam, Adolfo Arrieta's underground film, the film with the most transvestites per square foot in the history of cinema - most of my social interaction was with transvestites. [...] What Arrieta was actually making was punk cinema in the French style, and with its apparent excess of realism he was years ahead even of his compatriot Almodovar. 'An excess of realism. In the transvestite there is an enhanced femininity (women imitate them), but Arrieta just directs them as actresses, without insisting on excessive cosmetics or the easily flamboyant aspects of the situation,' Severo Sarduy wrote about the film." - Never Any End to Paris, Enrique Vila-Matas
Grenouilles / Frogs. 1984. France-Spain. 39 min.
Anne Wiazemsky plays a beautiful Russian spy, Nora, who arrives on an island in the middle of the ocean, to avenge the betrayal of her lover, the artist Tibor. Other characters include a spy from UNESCO, a mysterious stranger who is plotting the end of the world, and a gang of thieves disguised as frogmen...
DVD 4
Kiki. 1989. Spain. 23 min.
Luis Eduardo Aute proposed to Arrietta to make an episode for the TV series Delusions of love, and he decided to adapt La Chatte, Colette: the story of a woman, a man, and a cat. The themes of love, sex and jealousy are portrayed both tragically and comically, and the power of this film is to show both perspectives in parallel.
Merlin. 1990. Spain. 58 min.
Merlin, his one feature shot on 35mm, is an adaptation of Cocteau's play "Knights of the Round Table".
Eco y Narciso. 2003. Spain. 19 min.
In a garden at the party of the God Bacchus, Narciso's presence is the highlight of the party. Both gods and mortals seek his favors without getting anywhere.
Dry Martini. 2008. Italy-Spain. 7 min.
Tribute to Luis Bunuel's passion for drinking cocktails.
