Synopsis:

The setting is Vienna. A young American woman is brought to a hospital after overdosing on pills, apparently in a suicide attempt. A police detective suspects foul play on the part of her lover, an American psychology professor. As doctors try to save her life, the detective interrogates the professor, and through flashbacks we see the events leading up to the woman's overdose; her stormy and intensely sexual relationship with the professor, her heavy drinking and numerous affairs, and her estrangement from her Czech husband. A darkly erotic study of several rather unsympathetic characters.

Set in the elegant, politically charged atmosphere of Soviet era Vienna, this controversial erotic thriller follows two American expatriates on a provocative journey of sexual obsession. Condemned as sick by its distributors, and blocked from release for twenty years, Bad Timing stands as an essential cinematic master work from British film making firebrand Nicholas Roeg (Performance, Don't Look Now). The story of an erotic entanglement between psychoanalyst and voyeur, Dr. Alex Linden (Art Garfunkel), and the beautiful, dissolute Milena Flaherty (Theresa Russell), the relationship is deconstruction through the intervention of Inspector Netusil (Harvey Keitel), assigned to untangle the sordid affair when Milena is hospitalized in suspicious circumstances. Acclaimed for its innovative, neo-noir cinematography, non linear narrative, and featuring a classic score (Tom Waits, the Who, Billie Holiday), Bad Timing is a dark, disturbing journey into raw sensuality.

Psychiatrist Alex (Art Garfunkel) becomes sexually obsessed with Milena (Theresa Russell), a woman whom he meets at a party. The pair become involved in an intense and mutually destructive love affair. The drama unfolds in a series of flashbacks, as Alex tells his story to police Inspector Netusil (Harvey Keitel) who is investigating Milena's apparent suicide attempt. Alex's obsession grows, but Milena stays slightly out of reach. Bad Timing: A Sensual Obsession is an interesting exploration of the nature of sexual passion and jealousy.
