Synopsis:
São Bernardo is narrated in flashbacks by Paulo Honório (Bastos), who reflects on his rise from extreme poverty to wealth as a plantation owner. His economic success-and tyrannical ways-have isolated him from the people around him, including his wife, Madalena, a teacher committed to her poor neighbors and students. In a powerful indictment of capitalist greed and brutality, set amid Brazil's northeastern sertão, the film's central character is forced to question his life's trajectory and the condition of his soul.

The story of Paulo Honório, a poor kid who becomes a rich farmer. Obsessed by his desire to get even richer, he doesn't pay much attention to his wife, Madalena, a teacher who reacts against his tyrannical ways.
