Synopsis:
***WARNING***Multi-language audio (including English), Music with Dutch subtitles***Erbarme dich - Matthäus Passion Stories is a labyrinthine narrative in which notables such as Peter Sellars, Emio Greco, Simon Halsey and painter Rinke Nijburg explain their special relationship with Bach's St Matthew Passion to Ramón Gieling (Johan Cruijff: en un momento dado). They speak against the backdrop of a church which has fallen into disrepair, while a choir of homeless people and Pieter Jan Leusink's Bach Choir & Orchestra rehearse the Passion. Leusink isn't just the conductor, he is one of the main characters himself, with a painful past in which this musical piece has played a dominant role. Stories from the others alternate seamlessly with this. We learn how the St Matthew Passion played a decisive role in the relations between men and women, fathers and sons, fathers and daughters, mothers and their unborn children, and finally that in spite of our differences we all find a common denominator in the secret of Bach's music.

In Erbarme Dich - Matthäus Passion Stories, director Ramón Gieling shows the impact this piece of music has on people, and by way of video-thesis offers an explanation why. The film shows interviews with many people, both within the music industry and outside it, having them tell what the 'St Matthew's Passion' meant for them. You hear stories about music being a balm for the soul, about its healing capacities, and questions about the aesthetic qualities of grief. You hear people lauding the music and its sentiments, even though they struggle with faith. Conductor Pieter Jan Leusink and soprano Olga Zinovieva tell about some of the sacrifices they had to make to get where they are, and what it means for them to conduct or sing Bach on that level.

A labyrinthine narrative in which people relate their special relationship with the music of Bach, with Pieter Jan Leusink's Bach Choir and Orchestra providing the score and a group of homeless people serving as their audience.
