Synopsis:
The 'O'Kalems' was the affectionate name given to members of New York's Kalem Film Company, who between 1910-1915 produced almost thirty films dealing with Ireland and Irish subjects. The O'Kalem Company made history by producing not only the earliest series of fiction films made in Ireland, but also the first films to be shot on both sides of the Atlantic. The majority of these were filmed in and around Killarney Co. Kerry, making extensive use of the dramatic landscape and using locals as extras. The O'Kalem Collection (1910-1915) brings together for the first time on DVD the surviving 8 films of the series. They have been gathered by the IFI Irish Film Archive from archives in Ireland, the US and Europe and are presented here with new musical scores, along with the accompanying feature-length documentary 'Blazing The Trail'. The O'Kalems in Ireland by Peter Flynn and Tony Tracy offers an in-depth and authoritative exploration of the making of the films and their place in American and Irish film history. Together they provide an invaluable record of the earliest images of Ireland, pre 1916, making this DVD set a must-have for all those passionate about silent cinema and Irish culture.

The Kalem Film Company was the first production company to work outside America and they came to Kerry. Becoming known as the O'Kalems, the cast and crew spent several years in and around Beaufort and Killarney resulting in a series of films depicting Irish life and politics of the time. Kerry Film Festival in association with the Irish Film Institute is delighted to present the premiere of new score for 3 of these O'Kalem silent films at the 15th Anniversary Festival.
