Synopsis:
Doctor in the Village: This was the first film directed by popular Dutch filmmaker Fons Rademakers and it marked a great beginning to his career. Set at the turn of the 20th century in a small village, the drama centers on the town's doctor. He has been around for a long while and because of his personal ethics, he tends to side with the underprivileged or the common people on local issues. This stance makes him an enemy in the eyes of the town council, and especially so for the burgomeister. Once the doctor's wife dies, his personal fate changes when the council members and their leader gain enough power to act against him. This film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1960, and in that same year it was entered in competition at the Berlin Film Festival. That Joyous Eve: Late 50's. It's almost Sinterklaasavond, the Dutch equivalent for Christmas Eve. Normally these are joyous times, but will it be for three torn apart families? One family has always celebrated the evening, but now their accident-prone teenage son wants his own life. In the second family, a husband is more concerned about his secret love life than his wife and son. The third family has already split, as both have made the decision to live apart. Still there are doubts about their relationship. The Knife: A young boy coming into puberty is resentful of his mother's budding romance with the best friend of her late husband, and is torn and confused about his emerging feelings for Toni, a young girl in his neighborhood. His fascination with an antique Oriental knife leads him to steal it and he uses it to try to impress Toni while at the same time trying to break up his mother's relationhip. The Dark Room of Damocles: The fainthearted cigar trader Ducker keeps himself quiet during World War II. That changes when parachutist Dorbeck lands in his backyard. It turns out the parachutist bears a remarkable resemblance to Ducker. Ducker follows Dorbeck blindly, becomes involved in the Dutch resistance and soon starts killing people. When he escapes through German lines to the freed South Netherlands, no one has ever heard of Dorbeck. The Dance of the Heron: Edward (Jean Desailly) is a conservative, middle-aged husband who has made his fortune in manufacturing. He has never forgiven his flirtatious, younger wife Elena (Gunnel Lindblom) for an affair she had the previous year. Elena tries to make Edward jealous by flirting with a Dutch tourist (Van Doude), but the husband has no reaction. When Edward confides in his mother (Mien Duymaer Van Twist) that he has entertained thoughts of suicide, Mom talks Edward into faking his own death to determine Elena's reaction and loyalty to her husband. Mira: Based on a novel by Styn Streuvels, which was placed on the Vatican Index in 1927, this film examines the twin difficulties of a woman and her town. The woman, a liberated sort for 1910, returns to the town her father lives in. She is not warmly welcomed by her father or her town because they believe she gives her love and her favors too freely. When she returns, she begins an affair with her uncle, who is later arrested for murder. Then she has another affair, this time with a young engineer who is building a bridge into the town. The townspeople are strongly opposed to the bridge and the change it will bring. Because of the Cats: A gang of six wealthy, well-dressed and well-spoken hoodlums break into a married couple's house and rape the wife while forcing the husband to watch. Thus begins a dogged investigation by a determined detective who quickly finds that their cult-like solidarity can be a serious obstacle to breaking them. Max Havelaar: An idealistic Dutch colonial officer posted to Indonesia in the 19th century is cohvinced that he can make the kinds of changes that will actually help the local people he is in charge of, but circumstances soon make him realize just how out of touch he really is, and it doesn't take long for things to go from bad to worse. The Judge's Friend: When the gendarmes order a garage owner to open the boot of his car, they find a treasure of shares, jewels, gold and bonds. They belong to an old opera singer who got robbed. The garage owner drove the car at the request of Jules Depraeter, a bon vivant and dubious businessman from Ghent. When he is questioned by the police, he causes the Ghent examining magistrate Jensens to fall down as he wanted Depraeter to kill his wife. Based on a true story. The Rose Garden: The aged Aaron Reichenbach knocks a man down who he recognizes as being a concentration camp doctor, the tormentor and murderer of his sister. Aaron is put on trial and convicted of assault, while the child murderer gets off unpunished. The central story of the film, the hanging of 20 Jewish children in a school in Hamburg a few days before the end of the war after being subjected to medical experiments, is a historical fact.
