Synopsis:
The thought of starting a three week cycle tour from the northern English city of Leeds seemed bizarre when the idea was first conceived. Tour de France traditionalists argued the event would lose its charm and spectacular beauty by taking it across the Channel. How wrong they were! The Grand Depart was hailed as one of the most successful in history. The English public warmly embraced the Tour's arrival as an estimated two million spectators lined Yorkshire's small picturesque roads and filled its mystical moors. When the Tour shut down the streets of London, it capped off an incredible and memorable three days Britain will never forget. It was also a memorable occasion for Vicenzo Nibali - the Italian used the Yorkshire visit to kick-start a successful Tour de France campaign. And after reaching French soil, which coincided with unseasonal cold and wet conditions, it sparked a wave of drama that impacted on the Tour's eventual outcome. Crashes on cobbled surfaces and slippery roads ended the hopes and dreams of many riders, including pre-race favourites. Despite the climatic hurdles, it didn't take away from the Tour's historical and cultural values, not to mention the intense pushing of pedals among the warriors of the road. 198 riders from 20 teams battled their way through the natural elements before eventually reaching the Paris finish. They included a new-generation of promising home-grown talent - all challenging for a place on the podium, all attempting to become the first French rider to win the Tour since Bernard Hinault in 1985. The Tour will always be regarded as the most unique event in world sport. It has so many special qualities which separates it from any other event. Enjoy the ride in 2014 - you'll never forget it!
