Synopsis:
In this six-part series you will become acquainted with the many facets of Islam. You will visit the major Muslim festivals, such as the celebration of the Prophet's birthday in Cairo, the fasting at the end of the fast in Nigeria, and the Haj, the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. You travel back in history and visit the ancient ruins of Cordoba, the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, the former seat of the Ottoman Empire, and the mosques of the old city Samarkand. Muslims from different countries, including a lawyer in Cairo, a student in Istanbul and a village chief in Mali, talk about the influence of Islam on their lives. You will become acquainted with the great tradition of this world religion and the small tradition within the Muslim communities themselves. The roots of Islam, the role of the family and the position of women, the confrontation with modern Western society and existing prejudices are discussed. Can Muslims in countries where they are the minority of the population live according to the rules of Islam?
