Synopsis:
The true story of The Sullivan's, five brothers lost on the U.S.S. Juneau during the World War II, inspired Saving Private Ryan. The Fighting Sullivans (1944) begins with the brothers upbringing in Iowa, their patriotism and their tragic end at Guadalcanal. The cast includes Thomas Mitchell as the father, Anne Baxter a young widow and unknowns as the brothers. The Sullivan's parents approved both the cast and script, and sold war bonds in the lobby of New Yorks Roxy Theatre, where the film premiered. A sleeper in its day, today The Fighting Sullivans stands as a worthy tribute and a fine slice of Americana.

Before Private Ryan was saved, the Sullivan Brothers did their part for World War II. This riveting and tragic drama was the basis for Steven Spielberg's 'Saving Private Ryan' and follows the true story of the five Sullivan brothers who served together at Guadalcanal in 1942. Their patriotism and devotion to each other was overwhelming and took precedence over all else with tragic results. One of Hollywood's 'lost' classics, it was originally pulled from cinemas after its devastating effect on audiences of the time. 'The Fighting Sullivans' is a story you may never have heard of and a movie you will never forget.

The lives of a close-knit group of brothers growing up in Iowa during the days of the Great Depression and of World War II and their eventual deaths in action in the Pacific theater are chronicled in this film based on a true story.
