Synopsis:
James Ellroy called the Demon Dog of American crime fiction was both cursed and blessed by his mother s brutal murder in 1958. Haunted by her death, Ellroy grew into a restless youth, prone to petty crime and alcoholism; but as a mature writer, her sex slaying became the focal point of his writing. In this stylish documentary, narrated by Ellroy himself and driven by his powerful personality, the writer visits his dark places literally and figuratively as he returns to his mother s murder scene and ruminates on the meaning of her death. His fascination with the infamous Black Dahlia murder case shadows his rabid fixation on his mother s slaying, offering a candid portrait of a talented writer and an obsessed man.
