Synopsis:
It's August 1944. Much of France is liberated, but the Germans remain in Villeneuve. The abuses by the militia continue, and this swells the ranks of the resistance, and the struggle continues, even if life after the war is so close. The characters are impatient, and driven to their wit's end as they wait out a war that can only end one way. Then, they switch to "Liberation" - a world that no-one could imagine.

A French village and its inhabitants go through the ups and (mainly) downs of the occupation by the German army from 1940 to 1945. The village doctor is assigned as mayor, and confronted with the challenges, dilemmas, and contradictory demands and situations. At the same time, therre is a lot of peronal interaction with a number of interesting characters.

Since June 1941, and the opening of the Russian front in WW2, paranoias have increased about Communists in the village of Villeneuve. Arrests are made by mistake at the school, the mayor is having difficulties with supply, and the townspeople are cutting their own deals with the Nazis.
