Synopsis:
Gregory Peck was one of the most popular film stars from the 1940's to the 1960's. Peck received five nominations for an Academy Award for Best Actor which he won once in 1962. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Peck among Greatest Male Stars of Classic Hollywood cinema, ranking him at No. 12. This 10 DVD Collection brings together some of his most recognisable performances. MACARTHUR: During his farewell address to West Point, General Douglas MacArthur (Gregory Peck) looks back on his storied military career. Beginning with his legendary promise, "I shall return", at the outset of the Battle of Bataan and continuing through his troops' subsequent successes in the South Pacific, the film also touches on his anti-Communist activities following the war and his role in the rebuilding of post-war Japan, until his 1952 ouster by President Harry S. Truman (Ed Flanders). ARABESQUE: When a plot against a prominent Middle Eastern politician is uncovered, David Pollock (Gregory Peck), a professor of ancient hieroglyphics at Oxford University, is recruited to help expose the scheme. Pollock must find information believed to be in hieroglyphic code and must also contend with a mysterious man called Beshraavi (Alan Badel). Meanwhile, Beshraavi's beautiful lover, Yasmin Azir (Sophia Loren), seems willing to aid Pollock--but is she really on his side? THE GUNS OF NAVARONE: In 1943, a small commando team is sent to destroy huge German guns on the Greek Island of Navarone in order to rescue Allied troops trapped on Kheros. Led by British Major Franklin (Anthony Quayle), the team includes American Mallory (Gregory Peck), Greek resistance fighter Stavros (Anthony Quinn) and reluctant explosives expert Miller. Facing impossible odds, the men battle stormy seas and daunting cliffs. When Franklin is injured, Mallory takes command, and personal enmities spill over. OLD GRINGO: When school teacher, Harriet Winslow (Jane Fond) swaps her unrewarding life in America for a new life in Mexico, the last thing she expects is to get caught up in the middle of the Mexican Revolution. Kidnapped by revolutionaries, she falls for the charms of the fiery young General Tomas Arroyo (Jimmy Smits) and soon embarks on a passionate love affair with him. Further friendships are forged when American author Ambrose "Old Gringo" Bierce (Gregory Peck) arrives on the scene. With the knowledge that he is dying, Bierce is keen to keep his identity a secret, wishing to determine his own fate. As two cultures merge, three lives become inexplicably drawn together as they face love, death and war in the adventure of a lifetime. CAPE FEAR: After an eight-year prison sentence for rape, Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) targets Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck), one of the lawyers who sent him away. When Max finds Sam and his family, he begins a terrifying stalking spree, intending to ruin Sam's life. Desperate to protect his wife and daughter, Sam makes every effort to send Max back to jail. But when his attempts fail, Sam realises that he must take matters into his own hands if he wants to rid his life of Max for good. CAPTAIN NEWMAN, M.D.: Captain Newman (Gregory Peck) is a kind-hearted military psychiatrist who decides whether disturbed soldiers are ready to return to combat in World War II. Of special concern to him are a war hero (Bobby Darin) plagued by guilt for the death of his friend, a commander whose casualties weigh heavily on his conscience and a captain rendered catatonic after hiding in a basement in Nazi Germany for a year. While Newman tries to mend their psyches, he has ethical doubts about returning them to battle. THE WORLD IN HIS ARMS: Frustrated by illegal competition from Russians in the seal fur trade, Captain Jonathan Clark (Gregory Peck) struggles to raise funds to purchase Alaska from Russia. Another competitor, unscrupulous trader Portugee (Anthony Quinn), is hired to transport Russian Countess Mariana Selanova (Ann Blyth) to marry the callous Prince Semyon (Carl Esmond). After Jonathan falls in love with Mariana, he squares off against Portugee, the prince and the Russians to rescue her and restore the trading business. BEHOLD A PALE HORSE: At the end of the Spanish Civil War, soldier Manuel Artiguez (Gregory Peck) flees to France as part of the defeated forces. After 20 years there, he learns that his mother is dying and plans to return to Spain to see her. However, Vinolas (Anthony Quinn), a police officer with a vendetta, prepares forces to trap Artiguez. A priest, Francisco (Omar Sharif), tries to advise Artiguez not to travel to Spain, but Artiguez ultimately chooses to leave for a fateful confrontation with Vinolas. I WALK THE LINE: Henry Tawes (Gregory Peck), a middle-aged sheriff in a rural Tennessee town, is usually the first man to criticise others for their bad behaviour. Miserable in his marriage, Henry falls in love with teenage seductress Alma (Tuesday Weld), who is the daughter of local criminal and moonshiner Carl McCain (Ralph Meeker). Henry's moral character comes further into question when he is tempted to conceal Carl's crimes in order to prolong his relationship with Alma. MIRAGE: After a blackout in his office building, accountant David Stillwell (Gregory Peck) finds he cannot remember the past two years of his life. Discovering that a rich humanitarian died after falling from the same building, and that there are shady gunmen out to get him, Stillwell must piece together the missing memories of his life. Enlisting the help of a rookie private eye (Walter Matthau) and a reluctant old flame (Diane Baker), Stillwell uncovers the mystery detail by unexpected detail.
