This collection is presented as a portrait gallery by the great historians of art, their work and their concern to construct an intelligible world of images. Joining an art historian at their work, they have chosen images for us, seeking the affinity, conflict and dialectical tension. Each film is a portrait, the portrait of a historian who exposes their career as an art historian with some images, reproductions, displayed progressively on the table. The art world and the world of images are built together with a view to organizing our eyes, inside the frame. For each art historian, the situation is different of course. The final image, made of all images on the table in a sort of 'assembly' is more or less heterogeneous, more or less strange to watch. It is the riddle of life, a method and a taste - it is the eye of the art historian.
