Synopsis:
Awarded the "Best Documentary of the Year", THE PROBLEM IS MY WIFE, with its documentary reenactment of therapy sessions, captivates in a fascinating way the social and psychological backgrounds of male assaults. In a laboratory situation with real violence counsellors and (real) actors, director Calle Overweg shows perpetrators of domestic violence in the attempt to break out of the spiral of their violence. The cases shown in this film are fictitious after a long research. Domestic violence experts have also made sure that the depicted men are like the real. Similarities with living persons are intended. Surprising in the process of the film is the authenticity in which the actors arrive through improvisation on this topic. Their own relationship experience seems to be enough to slip into the role of violent offenders. Thus, the domestic violent offender corresponds to "normal men" even in real life. With his documentary reenactment of therapy sessions, director Calle Overweg captivates in a fascinating way the social and psychological backgrounds of male abuses. When violence in the relationship starts with men, men have to change. Joachim Lempert and Burkhard Oelemann, professional consultants, have dealt with this taboo subject from a male perspective, clearing up prejudices, analyzing the background of male violence and showing ways out of the cycle of violence.
