Synopsis:
An inksetter in New York, Quoyle returns to his family's longtime home, a small fishing town in Newfoundland, with his young daughter, after a traumatizing experience with her mother, Petal, who sold her to an illegal adoption agency. Though Quoyle has had little success thus far in life, his shipping news column in the newspaper 'The Gammy Bird' finds an audience, and his experiences in the town change his life. Then he meets the widow Wavey...

Quoyle (Kevin Spacey) is a weak-willed man with low self-esteem who works as an ink setter at the Poughkeepsie News. He's married to Petal (Cate Blanchett), a manipulative, cruel, and totally self-centered hedonist. When she runs off with another man, she takes their six-year-old daughter Bunny (Alyssa Gainer) with her. Petal is killed in an automobile crash after selling her daughter on the black market for $6,000. Fortunately, the police bring Alyssa back to her father. Quoyle has just returned from his parents' funeral, who committed suicide, when his Aunt Agnes (Judi Dench) arrives to pay her last respects to her brother. She suggests that he and Bunny join her in returning to Newfoundland, their ancestral home. Still in grief, Quoyle doesn't have the energy to say no and so they head off to a faraway place that he knows nothing about...

After the disappearance of his estranged wife (Blanchett), Quoyle's (Spacey) fortunes begin to change when his long lost aunt (Dench) convinces him and his daughter to move to their ancestral home in Newfoundland. There, a place where life is as rough as the weather and secrets are as vast as the ocean, Quoyle lands a job as a reporter for the local paper. Now, a past is emerging, a mystery is unfolding and life is awakening...
