Synopsis:
For Moncho, it's an idyllic year: he starts school, he has a wonderful teacher, he makes a friend in Roque, he begins to figure out some of the mysteries of Eros, and, with his older brother, a budding saxophone player, he makes a trip with the band from their town in Galicia. But it's also the year that the Spanish Republic comes under fire from Fascist rebels. Moncho's father is a Republican as is the aging teacher, Don Gregorio. As sides are drawn and power falls clearly to one side, the forces of fear, violence, and betrayal alter profoundly what should be the pleasure of coming of age.

In the summer of 1936, before the outbreak of the civil war that plunged Spain into 3 years of agony and terror, 8 year old Moncho is beginning his 1st day of school. At first afraid of his new teacher, Don Gregorio- who he has heard flogs pupils - teacher and pupil soon develop an inseperable bond, born of their shared interest in insect life. So begins moncho's apprenticeship into life and knowledge guided by his worldly teacher. But as the military marches through Spain and the community is split in two, their friendship is put under unbearable pressure.

Drama. The story, set just prior to the Spanish Civil War in the mid-30s, concerns a little boy, Moncho, who is terrified of going to school, particularly since the schoolmaster, Don Gregorio, is a seemingly fierce disciplinarian. As time passes, however, Don Gregorio proves he is actually a humanitarian and a good influence on Moncho. The two are together a great deal, spending a lot of time in the countryside, where the elderly Gregorio teaches Moncho the beauty of nature - as opposed to the unappealing ways of humanity, as evidenced by the march of the Fascists.
